Exchange Circular Logging error

You may see the following 'Circular logging' error message when using the latest Exchange plug-in with the daily incremental backup option enabled:

Error:22:00:04 [MS Exchange Plugin] Could not setup backup instance for First Storage Group :HrESEBackupSetup failed (An incremental backup cannot be performed when circular logging is enabled.)

To disable circular logging via Exchange System Manager

Note: Failure to enable circular logging may result in the computer running out of disk space. This is however not an issue when using the Backup Professional Exchange plug-in as a compulsory weekly full backup is initiated. Exchange logs are automatically cleared during a full backup.

  1. Using the Exchange System Manager, navigate to the Exchange 2000/2003 Server and select the Storage Group for which you want to disable circular logging.
  2. Right-click on the selected Storage Group and click Properties on the shortcut menu.
  3. In the General tab, deselect the Enable circular logging checkbox.
  4. Restart the Storage Group
  5. Repeat steps 2-4 for each Storage Group.
