Restore fails for files containing non-Latin characters (e.g. Chinese)

Article ID: 168
Last updated: 30 Jun, 2014

Symptom

In the Restore tab, the Backup Client incorrectly displays the names of files containing non-Latin characters (e.g. Chinese characters). See screenshot below:

When selecting and trying to restore these files, the restore fails and the following error is seen in the Backup Client:
"Error writing to local database: columns name, dir_id are not unique"

Solution

The following options are available to get around the restore issue:

  • Remote Management via the SP Console
  • Restore using a task file

SP Console
Enable Remote Management on the Backup Client (as documented in the Backup Client user manuals) and connect to the Backup Client using the Remote Management option in the SP Console. The Storage Platform Console correctly displays the files containing non-Latin characters in the file name and can successfully restore the files.

Task File
For restoring using a task file, see Article 61 - How to do a restore using a task file.
