Article ID: 329
Last updated: 01 Sep, 2015

Users and Backup Administrators (by profiling) can include or exclude certain files and/folders for backup.

The following table shows the order in which inclusions or exclusions take precedence (1 being most imporant, 6 the least):

 Order  Source Purpose Example
1 Built-in exclusion

Specified by:
a) Operating system
b) Backup Client

(Cannot be changed)

  • Files set in the Windows registry (FAQ article 67)
  • SE and DL installation folders.
  • ESE's ProgramData/Data and ProgramData/tasks folders

2 Feature exclusion

Determined by the feature in the Backup Client - for ESE only.

(Cannot be changed)

  • MS SQL database files
  • Windows Image Backup files
3 Feature inclusion
4 Profiled exclusion

Set in SP Console

*.mp3
My Music
C:\Windows

5 Backup Client exclusion

Global Exclusions, Filters, and direct exclusions

(Set by user)

*.jpg
My Videos
C:\Data
C:\Folder\*.mp3

6 Backup Client inclusion

Filters and direct inclusions

(Set by user)

C:\Users\john\Documents
C:\Folder\*.doc

Notes:

  • An exclusion always takes precedence over an inclusion from the same source.
  • Only these exclusions and inclusions can be changed:
    • Those set in the SP Console by profiling (level 4)
    • Those set in the Backup Client (levels 5 and 6)
