Incorrect disk usage calculated for HSM

Symptom

In the SP Console, the "On Disk" size of a StorageServer that uses HSM shows an inaccurate or negative value.

Cause

The HSM target location and the StorageServer's Data folder reside on the same volume. The data in the HSM folder is deduplicated against data that already exists in the StorageServer's Data folder which results in additional savings being recorded. This saving is included in the total "On Disk" calculation - in addition to the usual disk savings from Backup Accounts - which will amount to a negative or inaccurate disk usage value being reported in the SP Console.

Solution

  • According to Storage Platform Best Practices, the HSM target should not be on the same volume as the StorageServer's Data folder. Reconfigure your Storage Platform accordingly. Also see "Enabling/disabling HSM" in the Storage Platform Console User Manual.
  • Alternatively, perform the following if HSM data is not required:
    1. Delete HSM data on disk
    2. In the Storage Platform Console, in the StorageServer > Advanced menu for the relevant StorageServer, run Start Cleanup.
