Snapshot backups fail with long encryption keys

Article ID: 68
Last updated: 13 Jul, 2012

Symptom

When doing a snapshot backup and the client encryption key is longer than 16 characters the following error is shown (backup fails but account is disabled):

Failed to backup: cipher init failed: No installed provider supports this key: javax.crypto.spec.SecretKeySpec

Cause

This is because of US export restriction policies built into the Java Runtime environment from Sun/Oracle that is shipped with the Backup Client.  This will be the case for Client v6.1.0.4 and older.  Even if a client has a higher version but has been auto-upgraded from v6.1.0.4 or lower, the problem will remain.

Fix

There are two ways to fix this.

  1. Manually modify the JRE:
    1. Download the files provided by Sun/Oracle to override these restrictions from here.
    2. Copy the two JAR files in the zipfile to the java/lib/security folder under Attix5 Pro, overwriting the files already there
    3. Restart the service and GUI
  2. Do a manual upgrade (using the MSI installer) of the Backup Client using a version greater than V6.1.0.5 when it becomes available.  This will upgrade the Java libraries as well.
